of the British and General George Washington
of America. The odds were very much against
George Washington. He had 10,000 troops while the
British and Hessians together had
20,000 troops. On March 17 of that year, after
a siege of Boston that lasted for one year,
the British retreated to Halifax, Nova Scotia
to refit their troops. General George
Washington, expecting the British to attack
New York, moved his troops to Long Island.
He arrived to Long Island on August 13 and
set up fortifications and defenses to prevent
the British from getting past New York.
Washington Had 18,000 soldiers, of those
18,000 he put 10,000 of them in fortifications
in Brooklyn Heights. These troops were led
by Major General Israel Putnam
who served during the French and Indian War,
where he became well
known. On August 22the British landed their ships Long Island. They landed south of the American
forts at Brooklyn Heights. On August 26, the
Major General Howe
British started to march north east toward the
Americans to start their attack. The Americans
however, made the mistake of not
guarding three roads along the high ground. Word
got out to the British and General Howe brought
his troops along the roads and attack the
Americans from the left, and the Hessians attack
them from the front. As the British marched
forward and some Americans led by General John Sullivan were forced to retreat
behind the main Fortifications in Brooklyn. The
British surprised the American troops until finally
they were forced to retreat to the Main line at
Brooklyn. Washington brought reinforcements
in on the 28th of August, but was
forced to withdraw from Brooklyn on the 29th
after increased threats from the Royal Navy.
George Washington was then forced to leave New York on September 15th. General Howe
did not interfere when he had the chance to
capture most of the Continental army and
Washington himself. Washington fought during
his withdrawal all the way to the Delaware River
where he spent
his winter ad would recover from their loss.
